CHARM PHYSICS
Charm Physics:
The discovery of the particles containing charm (c) quarks (J/psi) in 1974 change
the particles physics, confirmed the quarks model. The existence of c quarks was
proposed by J.Bjorken to restore the symmetry between two generation of quarks
and leptons and also by Glashow, Iliopoulos and Maiani to explain the mechanism
by which the strange (s) quarks do not decay directly to quark down (d), but
indirectly in rare decays such as neutral kaons which present mixed state of
K0-K0bar (oscillation).
Although the c quarks was discovery 20 year ago, exist many things unknown from
this flavor. The measured properties in the final state such as
cross section, branching ratios, lifetime, etc. still have large errors as
shown in particle book data PDG.
Since the discovery of charm particles many experiments each time more precise, had been achieved to
search new states, find properties of charm particles and research exotic
phenomenon to test the Standard Model of the particles.
